GUINESS BEER and Murphys Makati

When our friend Gema told us that her English-Australian fiance will be coming to the Philippines, we were all ears. She has been excited for weeks. Since she keeps telling him about us, Rob, as he is called said he wanted to invite us for dinner. He told Gema to choose the restaurant and Gema asked me to have my choice of location. The first thing that entered my mind was Murphys Makati.

The first time I learned about this place was last year when a friend from Ireland took us here for a sample of GUINESS BEER. In one of our conversations he mentioned that its probably the most famous beer in the world. I admitted that ordinary Filipinos don't know of it. Even myself. And so the story goes. Since Rob is from Australia, I thought it would be better to bring him somewhere safe---I mean, not all foreigners love to experiment on Filipino food ayt? But Rob is different. He is not a picky eater. That I learned later.

I further learned that he is familiar with Murphys coz there are Murphys Bars and Restaurant in other places in the world. That caught me dumbfounded. So this is some sort of a McDonalds chain then? I asked the waiter about it and she said its true. But the one in the Philippines is unique coz it's the only Murphys pub owned by an Australian. Then again, Rob was a very good host. Yes, it was his treat!!!! He is different from the other foreigners I met. While most are serious, he is very humorous. That on top of being really kind.

We started with Asti wine. Sweet and smooth. To loosen our tongue I guess. But there's no need. Even at first, we already felt comfortable talking to him. There were moments of brief silence because Gema and Teresa were not feeling well. Gema had a bad flu and Teresa had a terrible headache after staying awake for more than 30 hours.

Then came the appetizer. I asked the waiter for their bestseller, she recommended me to have the one in the picture below. this is the reason why I dont food blog. I am terrible with name recall, not just with people but food as well. For the main dish, I ordered bangers and Mash, one of Murphys signature dishes.It's a choice of pork or beef. Served with onion gravy, choice of chips, mash,or colcannon and baked beans or mushy peas. And since this is the only place where you can find Guiness beer (to my knowledge at least) I made sure I didn't miss tasting one.

Odd enough---as Murphy's law says---anything that could go wrong, will. Teresa's headache got worse immediately upon going out of Wensha. Tension pain plus lack of sleep caused it I guess. I checked for drugstores in the area but to no avail. Rob then urged me to go on a taxi ride and look for medicine around towntown Makati. We found one in Greenbelt area. Rob is really very caring and generous. He didn't bother for his meal to get cold. When we came back, Teresa was already in the restroom crying because she is in a lot of pain. I admire my wife for trying her best to put up with it. Lesson learned. It's always best to bring pain relievers when away.

We decided to finish dinner and heed home. I planned of looking for a cheap INN somewhere rather than go striaght to Binangonan which would take another 2 hours but Rob insisted that we stay in the same hotel where they are booked. But its NEW WORLD Hotel Makati for goodness sake. I had second thoughts of spending 5 grand or more just for a 12 hour stay. But he insisted to pay for it. After a long compromise, we eventually agreed to take his offer despite feeling a bit embarrassed about it. He already paid for the dinner at Murphys and now for the hotel accommodation. He was insistent. Owe him one.

There, we ended in New World Hotel for the night. Teresa was sound asleep seconds after hitting the bed. And just when we thought the fun is over, we realized that there's more in store the next day.
