URBAN PACK HOSTEL: Hong Kong on the Cheap, A Backpacker's Haven! @urbanpackhostel

Hong Kong is no doubt expensive. And that is not just me saying. According to CNN, Hong Kong ranks 3rd Most Expensive City in the World to Live in 2016 next only to Singapore and Zurich Switzerland. But that doesn't mean Hong Kong is not good for backpackers as there are rewards for those who know where to get the most value for their money. If you are to stay in a hotel, it will most certainly cost you arm and leg. But good  news, there are many hostels in Hong Kong which you can book for as low as 50USD per night and Urban Pack is one of those.

Hostels in Hong Kong are basically located in residential apartments. So what they do is get a unit and convert it to accommodation. Urban Pack Hostel got 5 locations in the same building -- 5th, 10th, 10th, 14th and 15th. Each has it's own character. The hostel prides itself on its cosy design for the modern backpacker. It caters to all age group and races, anyone who appreciates a chic spaces. I appreciate that despite the high cost of space in Hong Kong, they allocated coommon areas where travelers can converge and socialize.

Improtant Reminders:

Before you take any form of public transportation in Hong Kong, it is recommend that you buy an OCTOPUS card. In addition, some forms of public transportation will not offer you change. Try to have the exact amount of the fare. From Hong Kong Airport ( recommended A21/N21 bus because there are seats, a luggage rack, free Wi-Fi, and it's cheap!):

By bus A21 (06:00- 00:00): The A21 runs every 15 minutes, takes about 60 minutes, and costs $33 HKD per person. Before the stop, you will see a large park to your right and a mosque. Get off at the 13th bus stop (Cameron Road/ Nathan Road).

Walk South along Nathan Road (same direction as the traffic). Turn right on Humphreys/Haiphong road. You will see Haiphong Mansion on your left instantly (the entrance is next to a Lok Fok jewelry shop). The intersection is Nathan Road & HaiPhong Road. After entering the building, take the elevator to the 14th floor and turn right.

The one at the 14th is the 1st. It is one of my favorites including that of the 5th due to its homey living area. Nice place to chill. One can access any of the spaces as doors are electronically accessed. That said, you can still socialize with friends in the other floors. I visited all five of them.

The one at the 15th is also cool because it has a small balcony which affords good city view. I met a Dutch guy there and had a good conversation about our travels. I also visited the 5th one night and talked with some Americans over political stuff.

Our room was the one at the 10th, the newest addition and therefore my least favorite of all the units. I was told they are still developing it to make it more cozy. Still, my bunk bed space was comfortable enough.

Soft mattress afforded us a pleasant sleep. Showers and toilets are common but sufficient. I like the showers and wifi is fast.My only issue are the lockers, they are made of metal and can get a bit noisy especially at night. I had to be very careful each time I open it so as not to disturb other guests. At any rate, it keeps your valuables secure.

Staff are very welcoming including the two young owners. One of them, Jensen, was quick to give us the above instructions to find the hostel and it proved to be very helpful. One of the receptionist (kuya Jimmy) is Filipino so it made me and my friend feel very much at home.

With its location literally next to MTR Tsim Sha Sui and with many interesting small shops and restaurants around, going around is a breeze. We never had any trouble going different attractions as far as the Big Buddha in Lantau Island or The Peak due to its strategic location. The Avenue of Star, although currently closed for renovation is walking distance away. As an alternative, one can go to the Star Ferry Terminal area and there is an elevated view deck there where you can marvel at the lovely skyline of Hong Kong island.
